Question of Enemies is a story about Tom Owen who orphaned at 16 years old and conscripted into the Welsh Guards and captured by the Germans and escapes back to his own lines however his injuries means he is repatriated back to his farm. Glenys his wife believing Tom had been killed was having an affaire with deserter Jarvis Weddell, who quickly departs when Tom arrives home. Jarvis is also wanted for murder and as the war ends he flees to the United States where he becomes embroiled with prohibition and the gangsters.
Several years pass and Jarvis now named Jack is on the run from the mafia returns to Britain and to Glenys. Confrontation leads to the death of both Jarvis and Glenys. Their bodies are hidden deep in a cave behind the cottage.
The story then revolves around George Schultz the illegitimate son of Tom and his German nurse and during the battle for Stalingrad of his escape and his return to German lines.
The Second World War ends and Britain begins to rebuild and a dam is being built to flood the valley where Tom’s farm is situated. The secret of the cave comes to light and Tom is arrested.

This is an excellent historical novel. I would have given it five stars but it needs some closer editing. Nothing distracted from following the complicated multi-generational love story. My area of speciality is traditional historical narrative, but I enjoy reading historical fiction to see if it gives a sense of what life would have been like then. An example of my nitpicking is that when describing two large men carrying concealed pistols, the bulges under their coats should be on the left side unless they were both left handed which would mean they would bulge on their right side from a shoulder holster. Some of the dates do not track actual military events, but none of these type of problems affect the flow of the story or the sense given of living in these interesting times. I hope we see more of this author.Product details
