They were soldiers. Fight or die was all they had known since they were boys. Colonel Rik Heron was on track to become the youngest General Joint Command had ever produced. But then his wild protégé, Vincent Greven was lost in a senseless battle born of the crazed ambitions of their superior officers. After two years of a hollow and empty existence, Vincent returns during a cataclysmic firefight. He is older, wiser and irresistible to Rik. While they heal from the last battle and repair old wounds, a deep bond builds between them. Friends and colleagues are not pleased about their relationship or their plans to leave the military. While the pair navigates a messy and dangerous situation, new plots are brewing that put them in the cross hairs once more.

Rik and Vincent are both `Altereds' (that is, deathly human weapons) and Vincent was part of Rik's squad before going MIA 2 years earlier. The books opens on the aftermath of Vincent's reappearance and his reunion with Rik, which involved the destruction of a behemoth that was menacing a city... and just so you know, I am not simplifying the explanation for the sake of keeping this review short; this is ALL that the author tells about the incident. We don't know why or how Vincent disappeared, where he went or how he came back. There's no detail about what he did during those 2 years either. Furthermore, we barely get the bare bones of Rik and Vincent's relationship before Vincent's disappearance, and no worthy explanations are given about what it is to `manifest', what forms the manifestations can take, and what it means to be altered. At first, I thought this was a book in a series, with all the facts cleanly explained I earlier volumes, but after checking it up, it doesn't even seem to be the case...
Unfortunately, the lack of meat is not restricted to the background information: almost no words are spent to place the setting or on giving life to the characters. Instead, character development goes along the line of "There, this character was like this before, and now he's like this" and that's it. No explanations, and maybe one example.
Once all this has been stated however, there's still the main reason of the novel: the love/lust/need/bond between Rik & Vincent!! The whole book revolves around it, on how strongly they're linked and can't bear to be separated. The emotion is very sweet and heart-warming (...and very domestic...). Once again though, it was static and repetitive - as a couple, they started at a certain point and did not move forward... but I appreciated that part anyway.
This book really has me torn -- I can't decide if I liked it or not. I'm not regretting reading it, but I can't say it was satisfying. Rik & Vincent's relationship was good, but there were so many holes and threads left hanging... *sigh* I guess you'll have to read it to make up your own mind!!

A Soldier Choice edition by DL Warner Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST MILITARY ROMANTICA NOVELS I'VE READ IN A LONG TIME.WELL WRITTEN,TRULY EMOTIONAL,ROMANTIC,HOT&SENSUAL AND VERY IMAGINITIVE!CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL TO GET HERE.DON'T MISS THIS WRITER D L WARNER!
Military Sci-fi M/M romance is rare indeed and I am very please to have found the "A Soldier's Choice". The plot itself is most refreshing with humans altered into expensive military weapons to fight off threats to mankind including aliens. These so called "Altereds" also possessed special powers and are feared and often misunderstood by the ordinary humans.
Colonel "Bliz" Rik Heron and Major "Hardcase" Vincent Greven are such "Altereds" and their nicknames stand for their unique powers. The story starts off really well and the writer does a great job drawing us into the fascinating plot and most of all the tender love story between Rik and Vincent. As the story progresses we learn so much more of their background, how they met, lost and found one another again. Their love is warm and romantic, their sex tastefully expressed. Rik and Vincent are most appealing characters. The fact that Vincent loves to cook adds a nice touch to the story. And there is one scene towards the end which really gets to "sappy" old me.
One complaint I have is the editing. It is most annoying when a great story is marred by simple English "errors" and wrong reference of subjects in sentences. Sybaritic Press should be ashamed. However I am not penalizing this charming story for such errors as I really like it alot.
Love this story about rik and Vincent. It's about how two people can still have faith and make a family with friends. Must read there is two other books to this that are just a good.
This was yet another awesome book by D.L. Warner. Everything was great to read. You meet different characters, the plot was amazing & all written. It had me hooked since page one. I laughed, I cried and even awed. You could feel so much from the characters that it tugs at the heart strings. I can't wait to read the second book.
