In eighteen years of investigating haunted houses, ghost hunter Ike Berenger thought he had encountered almost everything the paranormal world had to offer. But this case is different. He has measured cold spots, ducked moving objects, filmed apparitions and recorded disembodied voices. But this case is different. This time he has brought something home with him.
Now, to save the mind and soul of his girlfriend’s child, Ike will have to comb the darkest fringes of post-industrial Pennsylvania on a desperate, posthumous hunt for a serial killer. And he will have to confront the vengeful spirit of a mass murderer so diabolical that no one even knew he existed…

Raised In Darkness eBook David Skeele

David Skeele's description of a weathered crone from a remote village in Normandy, with her old world accumulation of omens and superstitious country remedies against evil drew me in willingly and without hesitation. Ancient concepts almost immediately collide with the new age at Lily Dale, the modern spiritualist community in Chatauqua, New York... and thereby hangs a tale.

In this short preview it's apparent that Skeele brings a much needed sophistication to a genre that's too often been passed over, too often conveyed by second rate actors in the first offering at the Drive-In theater. Skeele is not a member of that cheap thrills club. No, Skeele's work more closely resembles that of the intelligentsia of the psychological paranormal. He belongs in the rarefied company of M. Night Shyamalan and his work, The Village, and with Stephen King and his earlier works, The Stand and The Shining. Consider yourself alerted to the presence of a writer. A real writer! It's always exciting to discover someone with talent and Skeele obviously has it, in abundance.

Auras, mists, the spirit world, formless voices whispering - these are the ingredients of nightmares, shivers, and heart pounding, nervous glances toward dark corners when it's finally time to lay the book aside and get some sleep. Good luck! If I hurry, I can finish before dark. To sleep, perchance to dream? An unabashed 5 stars for Professor Skeele and Raised In Darkness.

Raised In Darkness eBook David Skeele Reviews

This excerpt was very well written, and as other reviewers have noted, the opening paragraph is quite engaging and sets up the mood of omens and the supernatural aspects of life. I. however, was more affected and intrigued by the very brief--but great--second paragraph

"For us modern American types, though, omens are a lot harder to see. Most of the time, in fact, if we recognize them at all, we can only recognize them in our rearview mirrors. We can only see them long after the point at which they would have done us any good. "

You can't tell from such a brief excerpt where this story will lead, but you definitely want to know--although there is no real action in this opening excerpt, there is a strong hint that such action will come soon enough. And with the details we already have about the main character's past "scare," along with the nature of his work and the cryptic words of the renowned psychic, Virginia Taylor-Brecque, we certainly get a feeling that (to borrow a phrase) "Something Wicked This Way Comes."
This writer has a deft and highly skilled hand, and the courage to push his writing into uncharted waters.

The reader is taken into the world of the para-normal. The first spooky thing I noticed, no the third thing, is that every time I post my review on this piece, it disappears.

So reader beware, danger lurks here. And then we have a protagonist who is "someone half-respectable, half-suspectable" Nice writing like this abounds. The prose is very descriptive.

"I'm bald on top, but I wear my hair long enough on the sides and back to get a decent ponytail going." The characters are well described and become jump off the page, alive and ready.

This very well written piece; it is strange, spooky and with an endearing charm.

Now I'll post, and if it disappears again, I'll be calling Virginia Taylor-Brecque.
We all can choose to believe or not believe in ghosts, but as the protagonist in this excerpt learns, once you've heard one, your choices are limited. I found Mr. Skeele's take on the paranormal intriguing and entertaining. His voice is strong, his intent is clear, however, at times, his transitions are jarring. I followed his protagonist easily through the superstitions and dark beliefs of the grandmother, yet I somehow couldn't see him as a young boy taking in the mumbo jumbo. If I could more clearly get a sense of the impressionable youngster,I believe I might more fully be taken in by the adult searcher. The author almost lost me with a long presentation at the paranormal conference, but he again cleverly baited the hook with his introduction of the savvy woman who is to become either a savior or the hero's nemesis. All in all, I enjoyed the voice, the story, the intent, and the theme. From the synopsis I gather that much will turn black before the story is done. I look forward to reading the enlightenment.
The story opens with our hero Ike Berenger, a paranormal P.I. giving a lecture about paranormal activities at the Lily Dale conference of psychics. Ike's main lecture seems to question the existence of spirits relative to scientific evidence. Up comes Virginia Taylor-Brecke, a fiery and renowned paranormal expert who challenges Ike's scientific theories. There follows a nasty exchange between Ike and Virginia who is adamant that spirits, both good and evil, do exist and that she has been 100% successful in driving them away from a possessed house. A great amount of the material is devoted to this verbal exchange. While seemingly mundane as far as conflict is concerned (i.e. a verbal fight--where is the excitement in that?), the skill by which the author handled it kept me in the edge of my seat. Each line of dialogue reveals to the reader a range of possibilities that exist in the paranormal world, especially the dark side of it. Yes, the dialogue may have gone unnecessarily long, and yes, we may have been bombarded by too much paranormal information, and yes, we may be coaxing the author in our mind to get on with the story, but it all worked in the end because the information itself is very intriguing. Plus, there is some terrific writing here. Five stars.
