The Cuban Missile Crisis was a hoax. In October, 1962, idealistic George Blair is ready to start his career as a policeman, engaged to a social-climbing harpy who has his future mapped out, when the Cuban Missile Crisis intervenes, and throws George into an undercover assignment to derail a revolt of the U.S. military on the plains of Texas. The government hopes to quash this very real nuclear threat, and at the same time conceal it from the public by manufacturing -- with help from the Russians -- the trouble with Cuba. Playing his undercover role, George goes under the tutelage of a drunken TV weatherman, and discovers that the revolt is, itself, a smoke screen created to hide an impending catastrophe that will destroy not just America, but the entire planet. The threat can only be vanquished by George, and only if he falls in love with the most beautiful woman in Texas and, at the same time, ensures that the weatherman gets what is coming to him.

I guess that I've become a fan of Marquette's in the last couple years. He writes speculative fiction--alternative history novels that are very digestible reads, told through a comfortable narrative voice. This story, like his other offerings, is a character-driven novel but with a plot that is engaging and very surprising. It fallows what Cary Grant once said of great thrillers: take a regular guy and put him in an extraordinary situation and follow along to see how he's going to get out of it.George Blair is that regular guy in "The Weather Man," and he is on the cusp of living a very normal life when it suddenly gets turned on its head. George finds himself in the middle of the Cuban Missile Crisis, without ever leaving central Texas. The crisis, it turns out, is a hoax, put on to crush a much graver threat than nuclear war. He meets characters that only days before he wouldn't have believed to exist and finds himself in the middle of a struggle to save the world. To tell any more would be a shame.
If you enjoyed "American Gods" you'll certainly enjoy this book. Not since Gaiman's Hugo-winning classic has folktale and modern literature been so seamlessly and believably mixed. While Marquette may not be carried by the publishing machine that carries Gaiman, he can stand shoulder to shoulder as a story teller.
Once again, "The Weather Man" is a character piece that can appeal to a broad audience. Speculative literature reaches across genres to a broad audience and this book is no exception. I recommend it fully.
